BEIJING -- An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted the sea off the northern coast of Taiwan at 10:48 p.m. Monday Beijing Time, according to Taiwan's meteorological authorities.
The epicenter, with a depth of 27.1 km, was monitored to the southeast of Hualien.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake scale as 5.1 with a depth of 15.90 km at the epicenter, which was determined to be at 23.5819 degrees north latitude and 122.3901 degrees east longitude.
