(Ecns.cn)--A granny in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region surprised local residents with her stunning gymnastic moves last Monday. At the age of 72, the woman displayed astonishing flexibility by standing on one leg with her other leg on top of her head, winning enthusiastic applause from her audience, according to the Nanguo Morning News on Wednesday.
It was not the first time the local celebrity surnamed Tan had drawn attention from local media. Two years ago, she challenged local residents to a gymnastics contest and won the silver award in the second China-ASEAN Senior Art Festival. Tan also went on a road show with another gymnastics fan around their hometown, which gained the team huge popularity.
At the latest show last Monday, Tan joined a group of her peers for a performance to celebrate Army Day, or the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. To add highlights to the show, Tan showed a series of gymnastic moves with a high level of difficulty, and attracted quite a number of residents from nearby. "It's not easy even for youngsters to complete such moves, not to mention a lady in her 70s," said Mr. Zhou, a resident who was amazed by Tan's performance.
Tan told the newspaper that she suffered from rheumatism and had been frail and bedridden before 2007. That's when she made up her mind to learn gymnastics from her neighbors who had moved from Hong Kong. Ten months later, Tan found she was free to walk, jump and run, which led to her addiction to gymnastics.
"I really enjoy performing such moves. It makes me feel good," smiled Tan.
