(Ecns.cn)--A judicial interpretation newly released on August 13 for the Marriage Law concerning the criteria on the ownership of real estate between the wedding couple has immediately sparked hot online debates in the country.
Some interpreted it as good news for men as it endows the group legitimate rights to walk away from their marriage without losing the house. Others were opposed to the new explanation for this reason. Some see the judicial interpretation as having a good side, claiming that it will help to crack down on those who use marriages to get a house and, thus, encourage independence among women.
The opposing voices, accounting for the most online opinions, come mostly from irritated women. They believe it will encourage more husbands to cheat and even file for a divorce since the new judicial explanation states that the one who made the down payment is the one who owns the property after a divorce.
It further clarifies that one party is not entitled to any rights on the property purchased by the other's parents during the marriage, since in China, parents of the husband are the traditional suppliers of the newly-weds' first house.
Women get nothing in accordance to the law once they get divorced. A web user named Ling Mei posted: "I believe that there definitely more men who would cheat and ruin the marriage than women who use marriage as a method only to get a house."
Some women even uttered their hesitations to have a baby since they are no longer protected by the law and would be driven out of their houses after a divorce even if they had children, said the Beijing Morning Post Monday.
Even some men feel unhappy about the new law because they would equally lose the legitimate rights to inheriting their parents-in-law's houses. Some even worried that women would refuse to get married if men fail to transfer the property under their names since it is the only way women can share the ownership of the house.
There are also those who give the new law interpretation a thumbs up, cheering that it will help to reduce the chances for women to use marriages as chances to get a house and offer poor men equal opportunities to fight for mates. Some optimistic female web users also joined the team to support the law, saying that it provides a chance for women in the new age to become independent.
In addition, there are neutral voices reasoning that the law will create a boom in the housing industry as more and more single people would rather buy. Moreover, they mock that it will stir concerns among mothers-in law since their daughters are losing their sense of security in marriage.
