(Ecns.cn) – Chickens reared outdoors is a common scene for us, but how about thousands of free-range chickens wearing protective glasses? To prevent them from sudden aggression, the chickens all have glasses on their faces in a cultivation base in Yangjin Village, Gaocun Town of central China's Henan Province.
On August 26, 2011, a reporter from China News Service paid a visit to the cultivation base which is located on the side of a hill. When entering it, the reporter was surprised to see that all of the chickens were wearing glasses. It was observed that the size of a pair of chicken glasses was about that of two soybean sprout petals in an oval shape and made of opaque plastic materials, with a hole in the middle of each of the "petals."
According to Ge Chunhai, a 46-year-old breeder, native chickens are born to be aggressive and they often end up fighting. He said that once a chicken is at a disadvantage, other chickens will besiege it. Feather pecking is nothing; much worse is that a chicken may bleed and sometimes the intestines are even pecked out.
Last year, Ge learned about the chicken glasses when he was watching TV, and he decided to give it a try. Ge's wife told our reporter that there are also some rules. For example, chickens can only wear the protective glasses when they are over one kilogram, and after that, they can keep the glasses on until the day they are sold. She also revealed that the best time to put the glasses on their face is at night when they are resting.
Currently, Ge has already fixed more than 10,000 pairs of glasses on the chickens. Out of the 12,000 native chickens he raises, only 700 do not wear the glasses because they are too wild to catch. Ge said that he is very happy and feels grateful about this scientific method he is using to calm down his chickens.
