(Ecns.cn) – The Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, one of the most famous "Beijing Ten Great Buildings" in the 1950s, will see a renovation and expansion project for the first time in 50 years, reported the Beijing News.
The project will kick off in early 2012 and is going to be completed in three years time. It was reported that a large number of high-tech weapons and military equipment, including those imported from foreign countries, will be added to the exhibitions.
According to Xiang Ronggao, deputy curator of the Military Museum, it will be the first renovation and expansion project since 1959, and the museum's space will be expanded from 60,000 square meters to 148,000 square meters.
There are now 11 exhibition halls in the museum, and the largest one is the Hall of Weapons with more than 300 large weapons on display. When the project is completed, the hall will be expanded by over 10,000 square meters to accommodate high-tech weaponry.
Currently about 90% of the items in the Hall of Weapons have been relocated. Xiang said the staff must be very careful when moving the items from the Hall of Weapons, because some of them are historically significant, for example, the Dong Feng 1 (DF-1) Missile and the J-8 Fighter aircraft.
In the following months, the museum's square will be prepared for temporary exhibitions and visitors will still be granted a glimpse of these weapons.
