In a new pilot project six public Beijing areas are providing free Wi-Fi service to citizens and travelers, Beijing Daily reported Wednesday.
The Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology (BMCEIT) announced that the free Wi-Fi is available in the areas of Xidan, Wangfujing, Olympic Park, Financial Street, Zhongguancun and Yansha (including Sanlitun and Chaoyang Park).
This pilot communications project was contracted by China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, China's top three telecom operators, with supporting funds from BMCEIT.
BMCEIT said this Wi-Fi service would cover the railway station areas in the near future, and in 2012 they will add more pilot areas in transportation hubs and tourist spots.
