A road accident in southwest China's Sichuan Province that left seven dead and eight injured was caused by overloading, local authorities said Friday.

A minivan, which plunged about 70 meters over a cliff in Meigu County in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture Wednesday morning, had 15 people on board when the accident happened. The vehicle had a designed capacity of eight.

The privately owned vehicle was carrying passengers to a funeral. Six people, including the driver, were killed on the spot. A two-year-old child died on the way to hospital. Eight others are receiving medical treatment, with two in serious condition.
