Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung on Tuesday said he has confidence in the constitutional reform proposal.
Leung said it is in line with the Basic Law, the National People's Congress Standing Committee decisions and Hong Kong people's aspiration for democracy.
Speaking to reporters before an Executive Council meeting on Tuesday morning, Leung said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government would submit the reform package to the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) when it is ready, and that the community and lawmakers could have an in-depth discussion on it.
Hong Kong people have longed for universal suffrage, Leung said, and he believed the community will support the reform package. The government will also try its best to seek support from the public and lawmakers to get LegCo's endorsement.
If it could foster the passage of the reform package, the SAR government would be willing to arrange meetings between lawmakers and Beijing officials, he added.
