Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, on Thursday called for deepening the China-U.S. cooperation on tackling global security challenges.

In a keynote speech to the International Conference on China-U.S. Cooperation on Global Security Affairs, organized by National Institute for South China Sea Studies, Cui said the two powers have common interests in jointly addressing global security challenges, and have shared responsibilities with other countries to maintain world peace and stability.

Communications and coordination between the two countries on security issues, bilateral, regional and global, are making steady progress and becoming important building blocks for the new model of relationship that they are developing, he said.

"However, measured against the needs to respond to changing situation of mounting challenges, measured against our responsibilities to cooperate on these issues and the real potential for such cooperation, what we have already achieved is clearly not sufficient," he added.

"We have to do more and much better," the diplomat noted.

Cui stressed that the key for China and the U.S. to cooperate on global security challenges "is our mentalities and perceptions."

He said the two sides should face the new realities of the 21st century, seek win-win cooperation among countries, advocate a new concept for security that stands for common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and work together to build broad-based partnerships, so to effectively confront the global issues for common interest.

"For China, the choice is clear. China will continue to pursue the path of peaceful development and the independent foreign policy of peace," Cui said.

He also said China remains firmly committed to building a new model of relationship with the U.S., which is characterized by no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation.

He expressed the hope that America will make the same right choice, break the constraints of unfounded worries, suspicions and fears, "and join us in this common endeavor."
