Eight people involved in the kidnapping case happened last month in Hong Kong were arrested in the mainland where 2.8 million HK dollars (about 361,290 U.S. dollars), one tenth of the ransom, was recovered, Hong Kong Police said on Thursday.
Including a suspect caught earlier by police in Hong Kong, a total of nine people had been arrested in the case, which happened on April 25 when some of the suspects broke into a house to commit burglary and abducted Queenie Rosita Law, 29, granddaughter of late Hong Kong tycoon Law Ting-pong. The kidnappers demanded 28 million HK dollars for her release. Law was released on April 28.
Senior Superintendent of police Anthony Tsang said at a press conference that the case has been cracked and the nine people played different roles in it, which was believed to be premeditated. However, the suspects' target was the house, not Law and her family.
He said all suspects were residents of China's mainland and six of them had been to Hong Kong before, adding that more are still at large.
Since there is no agreement of handing over suspects between Hong Kong and Mainland, Tsang said, they will have to discuss with the mainland authorities how to deal with the suspects and where the trial is to take place.
Hong Kong Police will also seek advice from Hong Kong's Department of Justice, he added. (1 U.S. dollar equals to 7.75 HK dollars)
