An early warning system for missing children was launched in Beijing Monday using mobile technology, said the system's sponsor state-owned Zhongshe Social Work Development Foundation.

Based on mobile Internet and Geographic Information System (GIS), the system will issue warnings within a certain time frame when a child goes missing, said Zhang Yongjiang from the foundation.

People at the location can help search for the missing children when they are notified through smartphone apps.

According to Zhang, the system will also coordinate social media platforms to notify and encourage more people to join the search.

The first three hours after a child goes missing are critical. Amber Alert, a similar child abduction alert system originated in the United States in the 1990s, is believed to be very effective in recovering missing children.
