China's top procuratorate on Thursday called on procuratorial agencies to pay greater attention to petitions from inmates to avoid wrongful convictions.

Prosecutors should strengthen their work to deal with complaints, tips and petitions from detained suspects and convicts in prisons to prevent or correct miscarriage of justice, said a document issued by the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) at a national conference.

The document said procuratorates at all levels should properly carry out their duties to supervise the enforcement of criminal sentences as well as the use of criminal compulsory measures and compulsory medical treatment.

Changes to enforcement for sentenced convicts should also be scrutinized, especially in cases involving corruption and other duty-related crime as well as financial criminals and organized crime convicts, the SPP said.

At Thursday's conference, Procurator-General Cao Jianming called on prosecutors to make greater efforts to protect the legitimate rights and interests of people serving sentences, ensure the fairness and justice of enforcement and maintain the stability and order at enforcement venues.

He also pledged severe punishment for judicial corruption, urging intensified efforts to crack down on prison bullying and inmate abuse.
