The Chinese nationals living in Kenya on Tuesday donated food, learning materials and toys to a Kenyan charitable school that promotes education for children with special needs.
Speaking during the donation ceremony, Bao Ping, Deputy Chairperson with Kenya Overseas Chinese Association, said Chinese nationals residing in Kenya have supported initiatives that uplift the living standards of poor and vulnerable children.
"We have built a relationship with Kenyan charity organizations to help change lives of underprivileged citizens. Our support for orphaned and vulnerable children will remain constant to help them achieve their dreams," Bao said.
The association has since 2012 supported the Tania Integrated Centre, a school for children with special needs located in Kajiado county, south of Nairobi.
Founded in 2000, the centre hosts 164 children with different types of impairment.
Bao noted the centre has provided a new leash of life to disabled children from poor backgrounds.
"Most of the disabled children at this centre are from pastoral communities and lack access to basic needs like food and clothing. Our aim is to support them acquire education and skill that will enable them succeed in life," Bao said, adding the association will maintain long-term partnership with the centre to help the kids there.
Donations from Chinese nationals and businesses operating in Kenya have transformed lives of underprivileged children and youth.
Joseph Kigunda, the center's director, said his school has forged a mutual relationship with Chinese nationals to address societal ills like poverty, hunger and disease.
"We have been able to feed, provide shelter and clothe children with special needs thanks to the assistance we have received from Chinese citizens since 2012. These children are rescued from harsh environment and we are proud to give them a new life," Kigunda told Xinhua.
It is not the first time that the Chinese lend a helping hand to Kenyans in need. In April, the Chinese nationals in Kenya donated some 67,000 USD to help survivors from Garissa University College terror attack to rebuid their lives.
