The General Administration of Customs (GAC) said it had confiscated frozen meat with an estimated value of more than 3 billion yuan (490 million U.S. dollars) in a nationwide anti-smuggling campaign.
The campaign, which focused on frozen meat, was launched earlier this month across 14 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing and Guangdong, and 21 organized gangs had been busted by Tuesday, according to GAC.
The cases involved frozen chicken wings and beef, and 130 suspects had been arrested, said the GAC.
Smuggling frozen meat not only poses food safety risks, but also circumvents taxation, said the administration, adding that the campaign will add other products to the campaign later this year.
