The Beijing Police on Tuesday destroyed more than 630 kilograms of narcotics ahead of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is on June 26.
This is the largest haul of drugs destroyed by Beijing Police in half a decade, said a spokesperson with the drug control department of the municipal public security bureau.
The drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine, and more than 4,000 doses of dolantin for injection and 6,600 psychoactive plants were incinerated, said the spokesperson.
He said the drugs were confiscated between 2012 to 2013. The police destroy confiscated drugs every two years, once they have been used as core evidence in criminal cases.
Beijing Police will continue to monitor sales and use of controlled substances at entertainment venues and reward public informants. A mobile application has recently been released to raise the public's awareness of the danger of drugs.
This year, the police have dealt with 960 drug-related cases, caught over 4,300 drug users, and seized more than 40 kg of narcotics, the spokesperson said.
