The driver of a BMW involved in the fatal road accident Saturday in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu province, had no driver's license or vehicle license, and police found methamphetamine in his car, Chinanews.com reported.

The BMW hit a Mazda when it tried to run a red light at a road crossing in Nanjing, killing both the driver and passenger in the Mazda.

The BMW driver fled the scene of the accident but was detained later by the police, according to an announcement by Nanjing police.

The BMW also hit a bus and a taxi, injuring a number of people.

The driver is suspected of being high on drugs when running the light, a witness at the police station said. At the station, police put a helmet on his head as a precaution after he smashed his head against a wall, the report said.

The details of the accident are under investigation.
