Former vice governor of central China's Hubei Province, Guo Youming, went on trial on Tuesday in neighboring Henan Province on corruption charges.

Guo, 58, is accused of accepting bribes worth 23.8 million yuan (about 3.89 million U.S. dollars) from local companies and business people between 2001 and 2013, according to the indictment from the procuratorate in Nanyang City, Henan.

The bribes, in the form of cash and gifts, were accepted either by himself, his relatives or other people. In return, he helped the bribers obtain economic profits.

Guo served as mayor and Communist Party of China chief of Yichang City, Hubei, before being elected vice governor of the province in January 2013. He was arrested last May.

Guo pleaded guilty. The court will issue its verdict on another day.
