Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department said on Tuesday that they have seized some 1.6 kg of suspected cocaine worth about 1.83 million Hong Kong dollars (240, 000 U.S. dollars).
The customs said a male passenger arrived at Hong Kong from Johannesburg of South Africa via Dubai of United Arab Emirates on Monday. After emptying his suitcase for baggage examination, customs officers found the suitcase still abnormally heavy.
An X-ray check showed a suspicious image in the suitcase. Subsequent in-depth inspection found that suspected cocaine was concealed inside a false compartment of the suitcase.
The 42-year-old suspect, who claimed to be unemployed, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance of Hong Kong, drug traffickers could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of 5 million Hong Kong dollars.
