Beijing saw a record-breaking power load of 18.16 million kilowatts on Monday, a 2.3 percent increase over the previous record, with 40 percent of the power used for cooling purposes.
Beijing weathermen issued an orange heat alert on Sunday morning, with estimated temperatures of up to 40 C in some regions.
Consecutive days of temperatures above 35 C saw a spike in the use of air conditioning systems in Beijing, which accounted for much of the increase in the power load, according to Li Jie, chief engineer of the Beijing Electric Power Dispatching Control Center of the State Grid Corporation of China.
Several measures have been taken to ensure stable supply of electricity, including improving the power network and managing the supply within the city, news portal cnr.cn reported on Monday.
