The chairman of Taiwan's People First Party says he will be a candidate in the 2016 leadership election.
James Soong announced his candidacy in a speech Thursday morning and said it is important to maintain an open manner and solve confrontation among parties. Soong proposed to establish a coalition that can provide a platform for the parties. Soong's party says that in addition to politics, the candidate will also focus on improving the Taiwan economy.
Soong's party is a junior partner in the ruling party KMT-led coalition. Soong is a veteran politician who is friendly with the Chinese mainland. Soong's candidacy marks the fourth time that he has run for a leadership position.
