Two farmers were killed and five others were injured by a bomb thought to be abandoned by the Japanese during WWII in central China's Henan province, said local sources on Friday.
Seven villagers were digging a water cellar in Nanzhai township in Huixian city on Wednesday afternoon when the blast occurred.
Wang Baixing, a bomb expert, believes the explosion was caused by a small aerobomb left by Japanese invaders after World War II. The blast was triggered by villagers using an excavator. Water and air quality at the site remained normal.
Local elderly villagers said the Chinese army stationed in Nanzhai during the war and there was a military hospital. Therefore, Nanzhai was often bombed by Japanese planes.
Wang warned people to be cautious using diggers. "One needs to know whether there might be bombs before starting construction," he said. "Ring the police if you find a bomb, and let specialists handle it."
