A total of 129 senior executives of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) have been or will be punished for ill-gotten gains this year, according to a statement released by the CNPC on Monday.

The CNPC said it has focused this year's investigations on disciplinary violations of the company's senior leaders. The senior executives were investigated from January to July.

The company is facing major disciplinary problems in its recruitment, overseas operations and use of company vehicles. Company executives who help enrich their family members or friends and are involved in the oil business is also one of the company's major problems, the statement added.

Authorities went through 63 reports from whistleblowers, and 17 have been confirmed. Twenty-two people have been punished or will be punished, and five of them were director-level employees.

The central government inspected the CNPC from February 28 to April 3o. CNPC held a conference for its senior executives in July, hoping to re-enforce discipline and to rebuild the company's image.

During the meeting, Party representatives said the company leaders need to understand the spirit of President Xi Jinping's speech and implement the disciplinary requirements of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and central inspection group.

The CNPC said it is crucial for State-run enterprises to uphold the Communist Party of China's (CPC) lead. It said anti-corruption activities will be strengthened, and campaigns in key industries will be carried out, which could create positive public perception.

The company added it will strictly manage Party members and eliminate the baneful influence of former security chief Zhou Yongkang, maintaining the forceful attitudes on anti-corruption.

Zhou Yongkang was CNPC's general manager and Party secretary from 1996 to 1998, and many senior company executives who worked with him have been investigated.
