Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a number of meetings as part of his upcoming visit to the United Nations and propose initiatives to contribute to world peace, common development and global governance, Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong said Thursday.

Xi will have a tight schedule and attend a series of summits to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations from Sept. 26 to 28, Li said.

It will be Xi's first visit to the UN headquarters, Li said, noting that Xi's visit shows Chinese leaders attach importance to multilateral diplomatic activities and the UN's work.

According to Li, Xi will attend the general debate and the UN Sustainable Development Summit.

Xi will take part in discussions on how to promote global development, discuss equitable, open, innovation-driven development, and put forward new initiatives for greater international cooperation for the post-2015 development agenda.

Xi will chair the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, and chair the High-level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation co-hosted by China and the UN, Li said.

The Chinese president will also attend an event on climate change where he will have in-depth discussions with leaders from other countries on climate change and sustainable development, Li said.
