Belarus is ready to cooperate with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in combating terrorism and extremism, Interior Minister Igor Shunevich said here on Wednesday.
Belarus considers the SCO as a unique platform for discussing topical matters and working out joint practical solutions for the effective counteraction of new challenges and security threats in the region, Shunevich said as he met with Zhang Xinfeng, newly-appointed director of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of SCO.
The minister congratulated Zhang, who was a deputy minister of Public Security of the People's Republic of China, on his new appointment, saying that the Chinese Public Security Ministry and the Belarusian Interior Ministry had established effective practical interaction.
Zhang voiced the hope that Belarus would become an example for other SCO observer countries to follow.
Belarus got the new status as an observer in the SCO in 2015 after having been actively involved in a number of activities of the organization in the status of dialogue partner for five years.
