China's Internet policy chief Lu Wei on Wednesday called for cooperation between China and the United States in Internet governance.
Lu made the appeal at the opening session of an annual Sino-U.S. Internet forum, which gathered over 200 Chinese and U.S. high-tech executives, regulators and leading academics.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff, and Didi Kuaidi President Jean Liu, among others, were present at the forum held at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington State.
In his keynote speech, Lu, head of the Cyberspace Administration of China, said China and the United States should work together to fight cybercrimes and cyberterrorism so as to build a peaceful, secure, open and cooperative cyberspace.
Lu's remarks came at a time when cybersecurity emerged as one of the thorny issues straining China-U.S. ties.
"We have to trust each other," Lu said. "We have to solve our problems through development. We have to dissolve our differences through cooperation."
Several deals between tech companies were inked at the forum, including a search pact between Microsoft and China's Baidu.
At the conclusion of the forum, visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping met with participants in the forum, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Alibaba CEO Jack Ma. [Special coverage]
Xi is in the United States for a state visit. He will later travel to Washington D.C. and New York.
