Beijing's major tourist sites received about 1.15 million tourists on Thursday, the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, local authorities announced.
The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, received its daily maximum of 80,000 tourists and stopped selling tickets at 1 p.m., according to the municipal tourism commission.
The renowned Temple of Heaven and the Badaling Great Wall received 58,000 and 25,000 tourists, up 191 percent and 40 percent year on year respectively, it said.
The week-long National Day holiday began Thursday.
