Eighth-seeded Chinese Zheng Saisai lost in two sets to an unseeded player at the first round of the WTA Tianjin Open tennis tournament on Monday.
The top Chinese and home-crowd favorite was beaten by Russian Evgeniya Rodina, 7-5, 6-3.
Fifth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic from France and Alison Riske of the United States both moved into the second round, beating Chinese Liu Fangzhou and Han Xinyun respectively, in straight sets.
