(ECNS) -- Southwest China's Yunnan province, a popular tourist destination, will be the first to establish a tourism police unit, Beijing Times reported.
The news was released during a meeting attended by the head of National Tourism Administration and senior provincial officials in the capital.
Yunnan will accelerate the establishment of a provincial police section targeting irregularities in the local tourism industry, according to Li Jiheng and Chen Hao, the provincial governor and party chief.
Both stressed the importance of stricter governance and the maintaining of order at popular tourist spots, adding that the province would eliminate persistent ailments and improve its tourism environment.
Tourism police have been considered effective following the the country's first such unit in Sanya city, Hainan province.
It is said that some popular tourist destinations such as Egypt and Thailand already have such specialized police forces.
