The relationship between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan has been improving steadily.
In April 1993, Wang Daohan, head of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, and Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation, met in Singapore. This paved the way for the improvement of ties.The meeting laid the foundation for peaceful development of relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
In 2005, Hu Jintao, then general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, met with Lien Chan, then KMT chairman in Beijing. It was the first meeting between leaders of the two parties in 60 years.
The mainland and Taiwan restored regular talks in June 2008, when Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland-based ARATS, met with Chiang Pin-kung, then chairman of the Taiwan-based SEF. In December that year, direct air transport, sea transport and postal services were launched.
In 2014, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, met with KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan in Beijing. Xi Jinping called on the two sides across the Strait to consolidate the basis for adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence", and to foster the common understanding of One China.
