A Chinese widower surnamed Hong and his children have won more than $5 million in court after his wife surnamed Nie died in an Orange County hospital when her obstetrician abandoned her amid complications, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Nie and Hong met in junior high school and lived in China. Hong is an architect and Nie was a financial executive. After searching the Internet for the best places to give birth in the U.S., they decided she should come to Orange County.
Unfortunately Nie suffered complications after her procedure on March 9, 2014. Her uterus began to bleed. After her obstetrician Dr Liu treated her for a few hours and provided her with several units of blood, the doctor transferred Nie to the intensive care unit for monitoring.
Liu stayed with Nie for 15 minutes and then left. Hours later, Nie's condition worsened and she essentially bled to death.
The jury awarded Hong and his two children about $2 million in their civil suit against obstetrician Liu for his wife's death. Court records indicate the family reached a $3.2-million settlement with Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center, where Nie was treated, according to the Los Angeles Times.
