Passengers leaving from Beijing Capital International Airport now can tag and drop their baggage at a self-service check-in machine if they are taking an Air China domestic flight.
Using the machines at the J section in terminal T3, each passenger will spend an average 30 seconds handling their bags while checking-in at a manned counter takes about 90 seconds, said Li Yang, manager of baggage check-in at the airport.
"The machine is very user-friendly so a young person will need even less than 20 seconds to handle their bags," she said. "All passengers flying Air China's domestic flights can use these machines, and if they do so, we will save a lot of manpower that can be used to help other passengers."
In addition to baggage facilities, the airport has also installed self-boarding machines at C02, C03, C05, C07 and C08 boarding gates, allowing passengers to board within a shorter time.
Tan Wei, deputy manager of the airport's terminals department, said the self-boarding service is currently available only for flights linking Beijing with Shanghai and Hangzhou but will soon be promoted on other domestic routes.
He noted that Beijing Capital is the third mainland airport to provide the service, following counterparts in Guangzhou and Haikou.
