Ma Ying-jeou has arrived in Singapore for the historic meeting with Xi Jinping. Before departing, Ma made a public address, saying he wants to review the past and look forward to the future with Xi. He also highlighted the 23 agreements signed between the mainland and Taiwan over the past 6 years, saying they had created an environment for peaceful development on both sides. [Special coverage]
The meeting will be first of its kind in more than 60 years. Xi and Ma will meet in the afternoon. Both sides will hold news conferences after a short closed-door meeting, followed by dinner. Ma also said he wishes to establish a mechanism for regular meetings between the leaders of both sides. He hopes this new platform could develop the cross-strait relationship further.
