Taiwan's election commission on Friday formally announced three pairs of candidates running for the 2016 leader's election.
Eric Chu and his running mate Wang Ju-hsuan will represent the Kuomintang, the island's current ruling party, while the other pairs are Tsai Ing-wen of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and her running mate, Chen Chien-je, as well as James Soong of the People First Party and his running mate, Hsu Hsin-ying.
The election campaign will kick off on Saturday and last till Jan. 15 next year, said the commission in a statement.
In addition to the leader, Taiwan residents will also elect legislators. The elections are both scheduled for Jan. 16.
From Dec. 25 to Jan. 8, the candidates will participate in four television debates.
