Tibet marks 50th anniversary of the region's founding
The year 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the Tibet autonomous region's founding. A grand ceremony was held in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, to mark the event. The Tibet autonomous region was founded on Sept 1, 1965, after the election of the regional People's Congress, the local legislature.
Religion is extremely important to the Tibetans, and has a strong influence over all aspects of their lives. A white paper issued by the government said that religious activities are respected and protected. Currently, there are 1,787 sites for different religious activities in Tibet, and more than 46,000 resident monks and nuns.
Local government has adhered to "green development" to preserve Tibet's environment in the past decades. The large and medium-sized wildlife populations of Tibet lead China, as the ecological environment is well protected.
In recent years, with the strategic objectives of building an ecological safety barrier, as well as an ecologically healthy and beautiful Tibet, the regional government has drawn up systematic plans to build and protect Tibet's ecological environment.
