China will provide humanitarian assistance worth 40 million yuan (6.18 million U.S. dollars) to Syria, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

The announcement of assistance came after talks between Wang and his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moallem, who will stay in China through Saturday.

"As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China will continue to promote peace and dialogue in Syria and offer humanitarian aid to the country to the best of its abilities," Wang said during a press conference along with al-Moallem.

China and Syria had in-depth discussions on promoting a political solution, reiterating support for the UN's mediation effort and about the Syrians deciding their own future, Wang said.

Both foreign ministers expressed support for fighting terrorism.Al-Moallem called on the Security Council to block the funding of terrorism and stopping terrorists from getting into Syria.
