Chinese police will target crimes related to prostitution and gambling across the country during the New Year holiday, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on Thursday.

The MPS said it has sent multiple work teams to 15 provinces and autonomous regions to supervise local crackdowns.

The teams carried out unannounced visits and cross-checks in more than 480 entertainment centers and transferred clues to the MPS for further investigation.

The MPS noticed a trend of gambling and prostitution in which law violators and suspects published illegal information online and made transactions offline with customers.

Policemen across the country have busted more than 33,000 cases related to online organized prostitution and gambling over the past year, seizing 81,000 law offenders, the MPS said.

Meanwhile, the MPS has also cracked 101 cross-border prostitution and gambling cases, nabbing 3,200 people, and freezing more than 3 billion yuan (460 million U.S. dollars) of illicit money.
