The foreign policy chief of the European Union (EU) Federica Mogherini Wednesday had phone calls with her counterparts in the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan following the alleged nuclear test executed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

During the conversations, Mogherini, ROK Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida shared their understanding of the situation, including the need to verify the claim made by the government of the DPRK, according to a statement released by the EU External Action.

They agreed that, if confirmed, the action represents a grave violation of the DPRK's international obligations not to produce or test nuclear weapons and threatens the peace and security of the entire North East Asia region and beyond.

Meanwhile, Mogherini and the ministers discussed the way ahead, beginning Wednesday afternoon with an urgent session of the United Nations(UN) Security Council.

The statement said they agreed on the need for a strong, coordinated and united reaction by the international community, including in the UN and in the G7, which Japan is currently chairing.

The statement also said the EU welcomed the strong statements made Wednesday by permanent members of the UN Security Council.
