Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued a notice on Sunday, calling nationals to examine information on the Zika virus and take all necessary precautionary measures to avoid infection. No Zika virus cases have been registered on the Chinese mainland as yet.
The mosquito-borne virus is spreading in the Americas. However, top health authority said the possibility of it spreading here is low as there are fewer mosquitoes in winter and spring. Zika virus is thought to lead to birth defects when a pregnant woman is infected. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus, which is related to dengue.
More than 33 countries and regions have reported infection cases. The virus was detected in 1947, but only began quickly spreading in America and parts of Asia. Brazil has been the biggest victim with nearly 4-thousand cases reported to date.
