From the eve to the sixth day of Lunar New Year, February 7 to 13, Beijing's PM 2.5 average density was 98 micrograms per cubic meter, a drop from 117 micrograms per cubic meter during the same period last year, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
According to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, the improvement of air quality was due to less consumption of fireworks and favorable weather conditions for pollution diffusion.
However the bureau warned that during Lantern Festival, which is February 22, the weather conditions will turn bad for pollution diffusion and severe pollution will strike Beijing again. People are advised to set off fewer fireworks that day.
