Sa Dingding, a famous Chinese folk singer who once won the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music, was exposed by some netizens as lip-syncing during her performance for CCTV's Lantern Festival evening gala held on Monday evening.
Shortly after Sa's performance, a short video clip of the performance went viral on the Internet. In the clip the female singer is seen holding her microphone upside-down while her voice can still be heard clearly. The next moment the singer turns the microphone quickly around and continues the performance.
Igniting criticism and jokes, the singer later mocked herself on Sina Weibo, posting that she will try harder to hide her lip-syncing next time, while also asking netizens to calm down, according to a report from ent.sina.com.cn.
The scandal has also led to criticism of State-owned CCTV for allowing the performance.
