A blue paper released on Wednesday says the country's aging population needs better housing and infrastructure.
The report on the habitability environment for senior citizens in China was jointly issued by the China Research Center on Aging and the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University.
The report said the housing needs to be improved to suit the needs of the country's elderly population. It singles out problems such as safety risks as well as poor amenities and insufficient care services.
The report estimated that by 2030 China will have more than 370 million senior citizens, accounting for over a quarter of the population.
It further urged the government to provide greater support to renovation programs to make spaces habitable.
