When it comes to treating drug addiction, an east China province is drawing inspiration from the past by using the classic works of Confucius.

An opening ceremony for a Confucius Institute was held Tuesday at a rehab center in Shandong Province, birthplace of Confucius.

More than 300 drug addicts recited Confucian texts at Jidong Compulsory Detoxification Center in Shandong's capital city Jinan on Tuesday morning, according to Xinhua reporters at the site.

Confucianism advocates family ties, filial duties and mutual respect, which authorities believe will have a positive moral impact on those receiving treatment.

"Confucianism will help boost the addicts' confidence in detoxification and reshape their spiritual world," said Wang Daqian, Secretary-General of China Confucius Foundation, which co-founded the institute.

There are now eight Confucius institutes in Shandong rehab centers. The first was established in Jining City in 2015.
