Taiwan's disease control agency said Tuesday that the death toll from influenza in the week ending Monday reached a five-year weekly high of 42.

All suffered from chronic illnesses or had not taken an influenza vaccine, the agency said in a statement.

From March 8 to 14, the island found 240 new severe cases of influenza, down from 314 cases a week earlier. More than 80 percent of new cases were patients of A/H1N1 flu.

Since July 2015, Taiwan recorded a total of 1,663 severe cases of flu, which resulted in 163 deaths.

The agency said it would expand use of public-funded antivirals to help contain the outbreak. It also reminded people to see a doctor as soon as they have flu symptoms.
