The annual event Earth Hour will land at 8:30 p.m. local time on March 19 this year. The initiative, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, calls for individuals and organizations worldwide to turn off non-essential lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., promoting energy-saving awareness to combat climate issues.
Since its first debut in 2007, the event has involved more and more participants from around the world; however, the initiative has also caused split opinions.
Some question the meaning of the event since the reduced emissions during the single hour is nearly negligible. While other think it looks more like a spectacle since some people use candles after turning out their lights, which release more emissions than standard bulbs.
Supporters believe that the event is symbolic, aiming to raise environmental protection awareness and its meaning is far beyond just the one hour.
As this year's event is on its way, will you turn off your lights to join ?
