The trial of a charity head from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region accused of raping underage female students, stood trial on Tuesday but none of the victims came to testify against him in court.
Wang Jie is on trial at Longlin county court on charges of embezzling money from poor students and forcing female students to have sex with him since 2006, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
Wu Hui, a lawyer for the female students, who are seeking compensation, was quoted as saying that the victims may get no money due to the lack of proof of Wang's crimes.
Only three of the students who were allegedly coerced into having sex with Wang in exchange for money or were raped by him said they were willing to testify but none of them came to the court, according to the report.
The lawyer was quoted as saying that some media outlets revealed the students' identities and published pictures of them after they helped police during the investigation, and they decided not to attend to the hearing and testify to avoid further unwanted attention.
Xiao Ran (pseudonym), one of the three victims, was quoted as saying that she understands why the other victims did not show up to testify against Wang as she was forced to move away from her hometown after she became the subject of gossip following an indiscreet police visit regarding Wang's crimes.
Wang is the founder of a charity that has given 7 million yuan to 4,600 students.
The court did not reach a verdict on Tuesday, according to the report.
