Shanghai sees increasing aging population in 2015

Shanghai has a registered population aged over 60 of about 4.36 million by the end of 2015, a year-on-year increase of 5.3 percent, according to statistics released by local authorities on Wednesday.

Elderly people account for 30.2 percent of the city's total population, according to the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau and Shanghai Statistics Bureau.

Those aged 80 and above reached 780,500 in 2015, up 27,300 from the previous year.

The statistics also revealed that Shanghai's life expectancy in 2015 was 82.75 years old. The city's life expectancy has kept above 82 for consecutive six years.

Moreover, Shanghai has a total of 1,751 centenarians, including 420 males and 1,331 females.

It is estimated that the registered population aged 60 years old and above in Shanghai will surpass 5 million by 2018, and exceed 5.4 million by 2020, the center said.

Shanghai is home to 699 nursing institutions with 126,000 beds, 422 daytime elderly care service centers, 163 home-based care centers, as well as 634 community canteens for old people.
