The United Nations has marked Chinese Language Day with a series of celebrations at its Vienna headquarters. The theme this year is "Silk Road cultures coming to the U.N."
From folk-music performance to traditional tea making, a wide spectrum of Chinese culture came to Vienna; among the highlights was a calligraphy show presented by 71-year-old artist Xie Xinci. Chinese cuisine was on offer too.
"Chinese culture is very long, very rich, and very diverse," said Martin Nesirky, director of U.N. Information Service.
For sheer spectacle, students from the Austrian Shaolin Temple Martial Arts School provided that with a dazzling kung fu show.
"We are very interested in China, so we like such events. Meanwhile, the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna is trying its best to introduce Chinese culture to more people, including art and music. We held Chinese calligraphy, painting, and photography exhibitions, as well as academic seminars," said Dr. Richard Trappl, Confucius Institute of University of Vienna.
The "U.N. Day of Chinese Language" has been held every year since 2010.
