New Zealand gained a record number of migrants in the year to the end of April, with Indians and Chinese making the biggest groups of non-New Zealand citizen arrivals, the government statistics agency said Friday.
The annual net gain of migrants (more arrivals than departures) reached a new high 68,100 in the April year, according to Statistics New Zealand.
Migrant arrivals drove the new high, up 9 percent to 124,700, although returning New Zealand citizens made up a quarter of these.
It was the 21st month in a row that the annual net gain in migrants had set a new record, said a commentary from the agency.
In comparison, migrant departures were down 2 percent to 56,600.
Annual arrivals of non-New Zealand citizen migrants were led by the following India at 13,100 (11 percent of all arrivals) and China at 11,000 (9 percent) and the United Kingdom at 9,100 (7 percent).
