Popular U.S.-based microblogging platform and social networking website Tumblr has allegedly been blocked in the Chinese mainland.
Chinese Net users claim that they have been unable to open Tumblr's main Web page or its mobile app since Wednesday.
Neither Tumblr nor China's top internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), had replied to the Global Times' request for comment as of press time.
Many speculated that their inability to access the platform might be related to China's supervision over pornographic content online.
A video published on Tumblr showing a couple having sex in a Shanghai hotel went viral on Tuesday before being quickly being removed from all Chinese sites and Web platforms.
News portal sohu.com reported Thursday that Shanghai police have started an investigation into the video's dissemination.
In February, Tumblr was also blocked by Indonesian authorities over alleged "pornographic content," the Xinhua News Agency reported.
In July 2015, the CAC ordered top Internet companies Sina and Tencent to fulfill their responsibilities and cooperate with an investigation of a sex video filmed in the fitting room of a Uniqlo store in Beijing.
The move followed the April 2015 release of a regulation stipulating that the administration has the right to summon Internet company executives when they fail to remove "unhealthy" materials from their websites. The CAC has met with executives of over 28 websites since the regulation was issued.
