With high tech like 3D projections and VR displays mixed with well placed standing mirrors in a hall, artist Tian Xiaolei finally has the chance to put the visual world of his imagination on exhibit at the Today Art Museum.
Opened on Saturday, the Waiting for You: Infinite Time and Space exhibition, which features 10 short animated films, offers an interesting peek into Tian's fantastical world of art.
With the films projected nearly everywhere, Tian's use of digital technology has greatly expanded his art creation. According to the artist, his goal is to mix culture, technology and the human body to give birth to "interesting unknown creatures."
Curated by Gao Peng, curator of the Today Art Museum, the exhibition features not only Tian's signature works such as The Creation, Poems and Ode to Joy, but also his new creation Unlimited, specially made for the current exhibition.
In the preface to the exhibition, Gao wrote: "It's hard to deny that young artists have the most sentimental and the sharpest impressions about society. The artworks of Tian Xiaolei keep reminding me of the experience of watching fiction movies. The subject matters in Tian's videos seem to avoid the familiar figures, objects and logic in everyday life, which creates a bizarre art world that features overlapping space and time. "
Winner of the first Wang Shikuo Award, named after the late revolution-era artist, Tian is well known for his sharp observation of today's rapidly changing society and skill in the digital art areana.
The museum is providing 3D and VR glasses for the exhibition, which will run until June 11.
